Jim O’Leary Named Publisher/Editor of The Catholic Register
TORONTO (March 4, 2009) The Archdiocese of Toronto is pleased to welcome Jim O’Leary as the new Publisher/Editor of The Catholic Register, Canada’s oldest Catholic weekly newspaper.
Mr. O'Leary was most recently a partner in a privately held book publishing and photo marketing company based in Toronto. Prior to that he was Executive Vice-President/General Manager at Sun Media's online property, Canoe.ca, which he helped launch in 1996, and has held various editorial positions at the Toronto Sun, including Sunday Editor, European Bureau Chief, sports editor and columnist.
“I am excited to join the Catholic Register team”, said Mr. O’Leary. “It was a talk from Archbishop Collins about one year ago at my parish that helped me explore my gifts in the context of my faith. This reflection has led to a new opportunity with the Register, a newspaper that has a tremendous history, not only in the Archdiocese of Toronto but across the country – it’s a great challenge!”
A product of Ontario’s publicly funded Catholic education system, Mr. O’Leary attended Neil McNeil S.S. in Scarborough and is a graduate of the University of Toronto. He is currently an active member of St. Patrick’s Parish in Markham, and he and his wife, Bev, are proud parents of four children.
His Grace, Thomas Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, commented on the appointment: “I am excited to welcome Jim O'Leary as Publisher and Editor of the Catholic Register, which has been an important voice, both in our Archdiocese and our country, for more than a century. As a new chapter begins under his leadership, I extend to Jim my best wishes and prayers."
The Catholic Register continues to be in the forefront of debate in the public square. Whether it be education, the battle against poverty or human rights, the Register pages have been a valuable forum for discussion from a Catholic perspective.
